Swarup Kumar, MD

I am an Assistant Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Connecticut with a clinical and research focus in Hematologic Malignancies specifically that of immune cell engager therapies and plasma cell disorders. I have a broad background in the field with training and expertise in translational and basic science cancer research prior to training. I have worked on several projects during my career with projects prior to medical residency that first introduced me to several key laboratory techniques such as Western Blots, RT-PCR and Immunohistochemistry assays. The focus of my projects during this time was understanding the natural history of Barrett’s esophagus through epidemiological and translational research. During fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology, I was able to devote significant clinical time to the care of patients with hematologic malignancies. I participated in tumor boards, national conferences, delivered lectures and presentations as well during this time. During this time, I joined the Jackson Laboratory for genomic medicine for a research year. My projects focus on RNA-seq analysis of tumor samples aiming to explore differentially expressed genes to answer biologically interesting questions. During my research time, I have successfully participated in several projects, collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications. My clinical work includes patient care focused on hematologic malignancies, exploring patient outcomes and conducting research aimed at improving patient care in this patient population. As faculty, I have been extensively involved with clinical trials on bispecific T cell engager therapies in Multiple Myeloma as well as on several research projects on patients with hematologic malignancies including leukemias, lymphomas and plasma cell disorders.
