Session Description: The session is devoted to a discussion of the biological roles of lipids, their importance in cellular structure, energy storage, and cell signaling. The transport of lipids in the circulation in the form of lipoproteins will be examined, and the physiological consequences of abnormal lipoprotein metabolism will be mentioned.
 
Session Learning Objectives:  Participants will (be able to):
  1. Describe the location and physiological roles of structural lipid in maintaining cellular health.
  2. Describe the basic mechanisms by which elevated intracellular lipids cause cell injury and cell death.
  3. Describe the needs for intracellular storage lipids to be stored in the form of triglycerides and inside a membrane-bound vesicle.
  4. Describe the physiological reason why circulating triglycerides must be transported in the form of lipoproteins and delivered to target cells in a strictly regulated manner.
  5. Elaborate on the biological roles of Cholesterol and describe how cholesterol is transported in the circulation and how the liver controls the quality and quantity of peripheral (not cell associated) cholesterol.
