Provided by University of Connecticut School of Medicine Office of Community and Continuing Medical Education and the UConn Health Disparities Institute.
Session Speaker: Emil Coman, PhD
Date: Thursday, December 18, 2025
Time: 12:00 - 1:15pm
Session Attendance Code: SALWOD
Session Description: This session is part of the Health Equity Lunch & Learn Series. Neighborhood context matters when it comes to health and health disparities. During this session participants will be introduced to PolicyMap, an online GIS mapping platform that draws on many layers of spatial data, which can illuminate the social determinants of patients’ health. We will share the experience of UConn and UConn Health students and clinicians who have used PolicyMap to process, map and analyze data to inform their research and action efforts to advance health equity. We will present life expectancy disparities, the roles of upward economic mobility and financial burden, and separate out neighborhood from individual health effects.
Session Learning Objectives: Participants will (be able to):
1. Describe the main geographies of CT and how Policymap represents and compares them.
2. Identify the types of geographic (areal) descriptors in Policymap, and explain how Policymap can travel up (zooming out) and down (zooming in) across them.
3. Describe the geography of ‘life expectancy (at birth)’ in CT, and how it relates spatially to the share of racial/ethnic minority residents across CT regions.
4. Describe how point data and areal data are handled in Policymap, while evaluating topics like ‘access to healthcare’.
