Session Description: In 2021, the Connecticut General Assembly declared racism a public health crisis and established the Commission on Racial Equity in Public Health. The Commission aims to formulate recommendations that mitigate the impact of racism on public health. Its key activities include supporting cross sector collaborations, establishing a comprehensive strategic plan to eliminate health inequity, and studying the impact of racism on minoritized populations. The Health Disparities Institute (HDI) at UConn Health was contracted to implement a strategic plan development process engaging residents through participatory research and planning.
During this session participants will be introduced to participatory planning and the state plan as well as lessons learned through the strategic planning process and the benefits of resident engagement in state health equity planning.
Session Learning Objectives: Participants will (be able to):
1. Participants will be able to describe the state plan for address racism in public health.
2. Participants will be able to understand the important role community members can play in shaping state and municipal public health planning.
