UConn Physician Faculty Learning from Teaching Credit
Program Description: The University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Office of Community and Continuing Medical Education, is now offering CME to our UConn School of Medicine (SOM) faculty and affiliated faculty may earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for new learning acquired in connection with teaching UConn medical students, residents, or fellows. Credit is not awarded simply for teaching. Faculty must acquire new knowledge or skills, such as by refreshing clinical knowledge or learning through exchanges with learners, and apply that learning in the teaching activity.
- Document an identified teaching or educational question or need.
- Identify the relevant sources or resources consulted.
- Describe the application of their learning to their teaching practice and whether it resulted in a change in knowledge, competence, or performance.
Credit Claim Limit: AMA sets no annual limit; however, the UConn CME Office limits claims to a maximum of 40 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per academic year. Credit may be claimed only for learning that occurred during the applicable academic year(s).

UConn Physician Faculty Learning from Teaching Medical Students, Residents and Fellows
What Is Learning from Teaching?
Eligibility Guidelines
- Physicians must hold a UConn SOM faculty or affiliated faculty appointment, and the teaching must involve UConn SOM medical students, residents, and/or fellows in LCME-accredited and/or ACGME-approved programs.
- UConn medical students, residents, and/or fellows must be among the learners. Activities involving only physician assistants, nurses, other health professions learners, students from other medical schools, or other non-UConn learners are not eligible.
- Eligible settings may include formal lectures, grand rounds, case conferences, clinical teaching, simulation, learner assessment, and mentoring, provided new learning was acquired and incorporated into the teaching.
- Credit is awarded for new learning associated with teaching, not for teaching alone. New learning must be paired with and applied to the teaching activity.
- Only the portion of the teaching activity in which the newly learned material is used may be claimed. Learning and preparation time itself is not creditable.
- If the same content is taught more than once, even to a different audience, credit may be claimed only once unless additional new learning creates a new learning/teaching combination.
- A new claim form is required for each new learning activity/event.
- Credit is based on actual teaching time and is awarded at a 2:1 ratio: 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each 1 hour of eligible teaching.
- The CME Office will request UME/GME verification of active teaching participation for the period claimed. Supporting documentation may include a syllabus, rotation schedule, or verification from the Course Director, Program Director, Clerkship Director, Chair, Division Chief, or designee.
Financial Relationships & Learning Sources
- Peer-reviewed professional journal materials that follow the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts created by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
- Accredited continuing medical education materials developed and presented in accordance with the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
Eligible vs. Non-Eligible Examples
- Eligible: A physician develops a new one-hour lecture for medical students and conducts research or other learning to prepare. Because the physician applies new learning during one hour of teaching, 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ may be claimed.
- Not eligible: A physician repeats an existing lecture without updating the content or acquiring new knowledge. Because no new faculty learning occurred, the teaching is not eligible for credit.
- Eligible: During a one-hour resident session on performing a physical exam, a physician uses newly learned methods for giving effective feedback for 15 minutes. Only that 15-minute portion incorporates the new learning, so the physician may claim 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
- Not eligible: A physician teaches a familiar procedure using only accumulated experience, with no additional preparation or new learning. No credit may be claimed.
- Eligible: A physician sets aside 30 minutes of a planned one-hour meeting with medical student(s) and/or resident(s) to discuss a topic of special interest or a prior patient encounter. If the physician researched the topic in advance, acquired new learning, and applies it during that discussion, 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may be claimed.
- Not eligible: Credit may not be claimed simply because students observe the physician for several hours or receive feedback based solely on the physician’s accumulated experience, without new faculty learning.
