Dr. Akif Altinbas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UConn Health, where he practices general outpatient internal medicine with a specific focus on obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated conditions. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.
Dr. Altinbas completed his medical degree and residency in Internal Medicine at Hacettepe University, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology in the capital city of Ankara, Türkiye. He pursued postdoctoral research in hepatology at Duisburg-Essen University in Germany and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where his work focused on mechanisms of liver fibrogenesis and biomarkers for liver disease progression.
His current research interests center on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), obesity, and cardio-metabolic health in primary care. He leads efforts to develop non-invasive strategies and clinical registries for identifying patients at risk for liver disease. Dr. Altinbas has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and he serves as a peer-reviewer for numerous medical journals as well as an Associate Editor for PLOS ONE.
