Session Description: This presentation explores a novel assessment framework for short-answer responses that combines evaluation of medical knowledge with analysis of communication and reasoning skills. Attendees will discover how rubric-guided assessment can enhance feedback, identify areas of learner difficulty, and strengthen educational support strategies.
 
Session Learning Objectives:  Participants will (be able to):
  1. Describe how principles adapted from Grice’s Maxims can be applied to short-answer assessment in medical education.
  2. Differentiate the five domains of the proposed rubric: prompt alignment, content accuracy, causal linking, precision, and relevance.  
  3. Interpret preliminary longitudinal patterns in short-answer performance across preclinical curricular blocks.
  4. Identify opportunities to use rubric-guided feedback and early academic support to improve students’ reasoning, and readiness for clinical skills communication.
